In his January 8, 1978, homily, archbishop Oscar Romero spoke of peace. As we pray for peace in Syria and in the entire world, it might be helpful to meditate on his words:

Peace is not the product of terror or fear.
Peace is not the silence of cemeteries.
Peace is not the silent result of violent repression.
Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all
to the good of all.
Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity.
It is right and it is duty.
In it each one has a place in this beautiful family…

I have been writing a few reflections for the day of prayer and fasting for peace on my Honduras blog, Hermano Juancito, here and here.

  1. This is wonderful, John. Thank you. Romero is one of my prophet/heroes. I have forwarded this posting and links to many like-minded persons on my email list.
