Judged on love

Madeleine L’Engle, U. S. Christian author of the children’s book A Wrinkle in Time and other books, died on September 6, 2007, at 88 years of age. In her book,  Irrational Season, she wrote:

We have much to be judged on when [Jesus] comes, slums and battlefields and insane asylums, but these are the symptoms of our illness, and the result of our failures in love. In the evening of life we shall be judged on love, and not one of us is going to come off very well, and were it not for my absolute faith in the loving forgiveness of my Lord I could not call on him to come.

This reminds me very much of the wisdom of St. John of the Cross which was paraphrased by Archbishop Oscar Romero on January 21, 1979: “In the evening of life you will be judged on love.”

  1. Dear John
Many a time I’ve seen your posts and have been inspired, energized or at the very least, informed. Thank you for taking the time to introduce us to so many saints. (Saints official or not!)
Blessings to you and all your work and words.
