Christ and us

Christ in so great poverty;
I in so great wealth.
Christ in so great suffering;
I in so great comfort.
Christ in so great labor;
I in so great ease.
Blessed Peter Faber, S.J.

According to Father Joseph Tylenda’s Saints and Feasts of the Liturgical Year, the Jesuits today celebrate Blessed Peter Faber, one of St. Ignatius Loyola’s first recruits. He died on August 1, 1546, at the age of forty-six.

This prayer was used on the graduation card of the group of us who graduated from two years of college at St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary, in Callicoon, NY, in 1967. It has touched me often, more deeply now than ever, while I live among the poor and suffering.
